What is graded motor imagery?

Graded motor imagery is a gentle, progressive way of practicing with your brain, not just your body. Therapists use it for persistent pain and movement problems.

  • 1
    Left or right?

You look at pictures of hands, feet or shoulders and decide, as quickly as you comfortably can, whether each one is a left or a right.

  • 2
    Imagining movement

You listen to guided audio and picture yourself making a specific movement without physically moving, activating your brain’s motor pathways.

  • 3
    Mirror therapy

You watch a reflection of your healthy side moving. Your therapist will guide you on when to introduce this final step into your routine.

Practice as your therapist recommends, and stop if your symptoms increase. Remap GMI does not give medical advice; please talk to your therapist or doctor with any questions.
